The 2019 Texas Italian American Sports Foundation Scholarship Awards Luncheon was held July 20 at Damian's Cucina Italiana Restaurant. Houston Astros General Manager and President of Baseball Operations Jeff Luhnow was the special guest of honor. Former Astros television broadcaster Bill Brown served as master of ceremonies and introduced Jeff to the 100 guests, including 15 recipients who received $1,000.00 scholarships each.
Faces in the crowd included Astros TV play by play broadcaster Todd Kalas, former Astros legends Larry Dierker and Enos Cabell, MLB.com national correspondent Alyson Footer and 2017 TIASF Special Guest of Honor Carolyn Faulk, CEO of A&C Plastics.
Since Jeff Luhnow's tenure, the Astros became World Series Champions, and possess one of the best young prospect pipelines in the industry.
The magical season of 2017 saw the Astros become World Series Champions for the first time in franchise history, six years after Jeff officially took over the Astros' operation with a promise to build a sound farm system and spend money to fortify a championship-caliber team when the Astros were ready to take that next step. He delivered on all promises when Houston captured the championship, following an epic seven-game World Series with the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Prior to joining the Astros, Jeff spent eight years with the St. Louis Cardinals as Vice President of Baseball Development, Vice President of Player Procurement and Vice President of Scouting and Player Development. Jeff is a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania with dual Bachelor of Science degrees in economics and engineering. He also earned his MBA from Kellogg Graduate School of Management at Northwestern University. Jeff is a U.S. citizen, but was born and spent more than 15 years in Mexico City, Mexico, and is fluent in Spanish. He and his wife, Gina, reside in Houston with their three children. TIASF is proud to have had Jeff Luhnow as our special 2019 guest of honor.
