The Annual TIASF Scholarship Luncheon

August 1, 2015

Damian's Cucina Italiana

Legendary University of Houston Football Coach Bill Yeoman was the special guest of honor at the August 1, 2015 Texas Italian-American Sports Foundation Scholarship Awards Luncheon at Damian’s Restaurant. Houston Astros TV Broadcaster Bill Brown served as master of ceremonies and introduced Coach Yeoman to the 100 plus guests, including 16 recipients who received $1,000.00 scholarships each. Bill Yeoman began coaching the University of Houston Cougars in 1962 for 25 remarkable seasons. In 1964, at the peak of the Civil Rights Movement, he broke the color barrier in Texas college athletics by recruiting Warren McVea, the first black athlete to be recruited by a major Texas college. “I don’t see color,” he said at the time. “I see football players.” His 160 victories are the most in Cougar history and rank 51st on the NCAA all-time wins list. Coach Yeoman is responsible for turning the University of Houston football program from relative obscurity into national prominence. He guided the Cougars to four SWC championships and 11 bowl games, posting a 6-4-1 mark in postseason play. The Cougars had 17 winning seasons under Bill Yeoman. UH finished nationally ranked 11 times, concluding the 1976 season with its highest ever national ranking of 4th. Coach Yeoman retired in 1986. His greatest legacy may be the invention of the Veer Offense, an offense that gave opponents fits and had a tremendous impact not only in the Southwest Conference but also in college football nationwide. He is the first representative from UH to be inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame. He has also been inducted into University of Houston’s Hall of Honor, the Southwest Conference Hall of Honor, the

Cotton Bowl Hall of Fame, and the Texas Sports Hall of Fame. Faces in the crowd at the luncheon included Astros starting pitcher Collin McHugh, former Astros Manager Larry Dierker, former Houston Oilers Quarterback Dan Pastorini, former Astros GM Tim Purpura, Joe Tusa, former HISD Athletic Director and 2013 TIASF Special Guest of Honor; Glen and Rita K. Roney and Father Donald Nesti of the University of St. Thomas. Since it’s founding in 1982, the Texas Italian-American Sports Foundation has awarded over $600,000 in scholarships to deserving student athletes.
